The Origins of Mala'kai

How I got the name...

Around 2017, I went through a very spiritual phase of my life. I was reading a novel by Eckhart Tolle called The Power of Now, and I was using his guided meditation practices daily. Late one night, I simply could not rest, so I got out of bed and meditated. It was silent, dark, and calm...that is until I heard this voice cry out, "MALA'KAI!"

It startled me, but did not frighten me. I decided to meditate further and after a few minutes again heard the voice cry out, "MALA'KAI!" I thought to myself, "Where the heck is this voice coming from?!"  I meditated a third time, and found I myself in this infinite void, where the only thing that existed was my own being. I realized that from deep within me, the voice rang out clear as day and was saying the word, "Mala'kai," into the void.

I did a bit of research, and I found that the name has Hebrew origins. The name is typically spelled "Malachi," and loosely translates to  "My Messenger," or "Messenger of God." I do not believe I am some kind of holy prophet, but I do believe that "Mala'kai" is a great adjective to describe my being, or for lack of a better word, my soul. When it came time to select an alias for my artist persona, I knew immediately it had to be "Mala'kai." I added the apostrophe and changed the second part of the name to be spelled "kai," which in Hawaiian generally means "ocean." It's a nod to my roots and my ancestors, who are Hawaiian-Filipino.

Since that day, I've been on a journey of continually reconnecting with the deeper parts of myself and channeling the energy I find there into creating music. I am classically trained as a percussionist, and I spent many years drumming in local rock bands, but these days I've been loving electronic music production with a strong emphasis in Drum and Bass. The sound is so tribal in nature, and there's something about 174 bpm that resonates deeply within me. I use music production and dancing to DnB to stay in tune with my inner "Mala'kai."

Thankfully, I feel like I'm also getting technically skilled enough to share my art with you! I hope you have fun exploring my site and checking out the music I've created for you. I explore all sorts of topics, moods, and motifs. Hopefully you find something that suits your fancy. I've made the music largely available for super cheap, with the option of spending more to support me if you find something that resonates deeply within your being as well. I'm hoping that at least one of my tracks can ignite that feeling within you, as chasing that feeling is what I live for these days, and I'd love to share that experience with you!

Have fun, and be well. Much love, and thanks for the support!
